On its surface, the question posed by this work - Is Penn State a Real University? - seems ridiculous. Yet, its thoughtful exploration by Dr. Ben Novak, a four-term former trustee, reveals that there is far more to the answer than one might first imagine. Nearly 25 years ago, State College Magazine published the essays that form the core of this audiobook. Assembled for the first time and updated for contemporary listeners, Dr. Novak's explication - equal parts informational and inspirational - rings as true today as at the time of its original publication. Is Penn State a Real University? is an insightful meditation that presents a grounded, evergreen vision for students, alumni, townspeople, and professors everywhere. 1. Language: English. FDLE agent Bill Tasker’s boss is worried about the stress Tasker’s been under, but he has a solution. The governor wants somebody from the outside to take a look into an inmate homicide at Manatee Correctional Prison, and the boss figures he can do the state a favor and give Tasker a break at the same time. Some break. Turns out there’s a whole lot going on at Manatee. The prison captain likes to enforce discipline by fairly unorthodox methods. The psych ward has been known to misplace a mental patient occasionally. A trustee named Luther has far more on his mind than working in the prison library—though the rods holding up the shelves do make very nice shivs. The prison inspector is carrying a number of very uninspector-like secrets. And something very bad is about to happen to Tasker’s next-door neighbor. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, after all. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gene Engene. Across God’s Frontiers: Catholic Sisters in the...

Roman Catholic sisters first traveled to the American West as providers of social services, education, and medical assistance. In Across God’s Frontiers, Anne M. Butler traces the ways in which sisters challenged and reconfigured contemporary ideas about women, work, religion, and the West; moreover, she demonstrates how religious life became a vehicle for increasing women’s agency and power. Moving to the West introduced significant changes for these women, including public employment and unconventional monastic lives. As nuns and sisters adjusted to new circumstances and immersed themselves in rugged environments, the West shaped them; and through their labors and charities, they in turn shaped the West. These female religious pioneers built institutions, brokered relationships between indigenous peoples and encroaching settlers, and undertook varied occupations, often without organized funding or direct support from the church hierarchy. A comprehensive history of Roman Catholic nuns and sisters in the American West, Across God’s Frontiers reveals these women as dynamic and creative architects of civic and religious institutions in western communities. About the author: Anne M. Butler is trustee professor emerita at Utah State University and past editor of the Western Historical Quarterly. Author of numerous articles and books, including Daughters of Joy, Sisters of Misery, she has published extensively on matters of race, class, and gender in the history of the American West. 1. Hawaiian Native Title

Hawaiian Native Title, addresses the question: how is the ceded lands trust and the rights of the Native Hawaiian peoples in the trust perceived? Lindsey argues that the way this question is answered affects the fate of Native Hawaiian peoples. If the current paradigm of the State of Hawai i as trustee and Native Hawaiians as wards is accepted, the status quo of mismanagement and distrust is maintained. If ceded lands continue to be perceived as a public trust, their purpose for the betterment of the conditions of native Hawaiians may be frustrated by constitutional challenges. Moreover, the legitimacy of Native Hawaiian self-definition will be denied and the continuity of Hawaiian cultural rights and responsibilities will be shaped by others. If, however, trust is understood in terms of Hawaiian Native Title, it is removed from constitutional scrutiny, the protection and perpetuation of Hawaiian traditional and customary rights is promoted, and Native Hawaiian self-determination and sovereignty is facilitated. Lindsey concludes that reconceptualizing ceded lands in terms of Hawaiian Native Title provides the position necessary to structure justice on Native Hawaiian terms.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! At the passing of the first millennium AD, Europe was experiencing the full effects of the order and advances in social structure begun during the early Middle Ages, however, the structure and development (s) offered by medieval European society were not found beyond the Carpathian Mountains and the Rus' was left as a disordered regionalist "state". The early development of feudal society in the absence of a strong central government helped the European states overcome the harshness experienced in the Dark Ages by enabling the creation of strong governments. Western Europe's creation of the manorial (economic)/feudal (political) system, which spawned the full development of their feudal society spreading across Europe and bridging the gap to England, a society which divided land, top to bottom, from the monarch to his immediate trustee or vassal, to the peasant or serf, who worked the fiefs in tribute, in return for protection from invaders. This symbiotic system created the first central governments throughout Christendom since the fall of Rome.
