The authoritative, informative, and reassuring guide on end-of-life care for our aging population. Most people say they would like to die quietly at home. But overly aggressive medical advice, coupled with an unrealistic sense of invincibility or overconfidence in our health-care system, results in the majority of elderly patients misguidedly dying in institutions. Many undergo painful procedures instead of having the better and more peaceful death they deserve. At Peace outlines specific active and passive steps that older patients and their health-care proxies can take to ensure loved ones live their last days comfortably at home and/or in hospice when further aggressive care is inappropriate. Through Dr. Samuel Harrington's own experience with the aging and deaths of his parents and of working with patients, he describes the terminal patterns of the six most common chronic diseases; how to recognize a terminal diagnosis even when the doctor is not clear about it; how to have the hard conversation about end-of-life wishes; how to minimize painful treatments; when to seek hospice care; and how to deal with dementia and other special issues. Informed by more than 30 years of clinical practice, Dr. Harrington came to understand that the American health-care system wasn't designed to treat the aging population with care and compassion. His work as a hospice trustee and later as a hospital trustee drove his passion for helping patients make appropriate end-of-life decisions. FDLE agent Bill Tasker’s boss is worried about the stress Tasker’s been under, but he has a solution. The governor wants somebody from the outside to take a look into an inmate homicide at Manatee Correctional Prison, and the boss figures he can do the state a favor and give Tasker a break at the same time. Some break. Turns out there’s a whole lot going on at Manatee. The prison captain likes to enforce discipline by fairly unorthodox methods. The psych ward has been known to misplace a mental patient occasionally. A trustee named Luther has far more on his mind than working in the prison library—though the rods holding up the shelves do make very nice shivs. The prison inspector is carrying a number of very uninspector-like secrets. And something very bad is about to happen to Tasker’s next-door neighbor. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, after all. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gene Engene. Roman Catholic sisters first traveled to the American West as providers of social services, education, and medical assistance. In Across God’s Frontiers, Anne M. Butler traces the ways in which sisters challenged and reconfigured contemporary ideas about women, work, religion, and the West; moreover, she demonstrates how religious life became a vehicle for increasing women’s agency and power. Moving to the West introduced significant changes for these women, including public employment and unconventional monastic lives. As nuns and sisters adjusted to new circumstances and immersed themselves in rugged environments, the West shaped them; and through their labors and charities, they in turn shaped the West. These female religious pioneers built institutions, brokered relationships between indigenous peoples and encroaching settlers, and undertook varied occupations, often without organized funding or direct support from the church hierarchy. A comprehensive history of Roman Catholic nuns and sisters in the American West, Across God’s Frontiers reveals these women as dynamic and creative architects of civic and religious institutions in western communities. About the author: Anne M. Butler is trustee professor emerita at Utah State University and past editor of the Western Historical Quarterly. Author of numerous articles and books, including Daughters of Joy, Sisters of Misery, she has published extensively on matters of race, class, and gender in the history of the American West. 1. I started out learning artwork all the way back at the Brooklyn Museum Art Classes to prepare for and was accepted to the High School of Art & Design in Manhattan. With below average grades but an extremely good artwork portfolio I was accepted into the Cooper Union Institute for three years Certificate Program. When I was nearing the legal age to drink, I applied and was accepted to the S.U.N.Y. Purchase Conservatory of Visual Art. After graduating with a 2.5 G.P.A. I was hired by the Board of Education to teach Chess and Computer Classes. Around the second year of teaching I was notified that a trustee of our family had enough money set aside to pay out a book contract expense. When I went back to school yet again at New Horizons C.L.C. I certified in Office Programs and for some reason or another was able to solve all of these technical problems with finishing a book publishing job. I handed that over to my dad, Sam whom wrote 7 reprinted books full time for three years. I published my first book under my own first name this year, Peter Sloan Teaches How to Draw Cartoons. I had an agreement with many artists over my ten years of academy of art training if I am to write a book on artwork to follow the tradition of many cartoon artists and publish my first book about how to draw the face. Most of my work is computer technical and books about games, but following with my agreement to write my very first book about cartoon portrait artwork. Enjoy listening. 1. Language: English. Today’s celebrity CEO is either a figurehead or an egomaniac, too public a personality to get the real work done. That work is done instead by teams of leaders: exceptional deputies who forge great partnerships to maximize both organizational and personal success. Written for CEOs, managers, and anyone else interested in modern organizations, this is the first comprehensive study of co-leaders and their often quiet power. In a growing number of non-hierarchical organizations, talent, not title, is the source of power; boss and subordinate seem more like peers, with the spotlight on great partnerships. Co-leaders understand both the executive and subordinate experience, making them better adapted to the needs of the new millennium, where those who can command and follow will prove to be the greatest assets of any organization. David A. Heenan is a trustee of the Estate of James Campbell, one of the nation’s largest landowners, with assets valued at over two billion dollars. A former senior executive with Citicorp and Jardine Matheson, Heenan has served on the faculties of the Wharton School and the Columbia Graduate School of Business. He is the author of The New Corporate Frontier and The Re-United States of America. Warren Bennis is Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California and a consultant to multinational companies and governments throughout the world. Author of over a dozen books, including the best-sellers Leaders and On Becoming a Leader, Bennis’s insights have fundamentally shaped the way we think about leaders today. 1. Language: English. Craig Beck is a well-regarded family man with two children, a nice home, and a successful media career; a director of several companies and at one time the trustee of a large children’s charity. Outwardly, Craig was a highly successful and functioning professional man in spite of a ‘two-bottles-of-wine-a-night" drinking habit. For 20 years he struggled to control his drinking, all the time refusing to label himself an alcoholic because he didn't believe he met the stereotypical image that the word portrayed. He tried countless ways to cut down; attempting ‘dry months’, banning himself from drinking spirits, only drinking at the weekend and special occasions (and found that it is amazing how even the smallest of event can suddenly become ‘special’). All these 'willpower' based attempts to stop drinking failed (exactly as they were destined to do). Slowly he discovered the truth about alcohol addiction and one by one all the lies he had previously believed started to fall apart. For the first time he noticed that he genuinely didn’t want to drink anymore. In this book he will lead you though the same amazing process. Craig is known around the world as "The Stop Drinking Expert" and many thousands of people just like you have quit drinking using his method. This updated edition of the best-selling Alcohol Lied to Me is new for 2014. No need to declare yourself an alcoholic. A permanent cure, not a lifetime struggle. No group meetings or expensive rehab. No humiliation, no pain, and 100% no ‘will power’ required. Treats the source of the problem not the symptoms. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Craig Beck.
